Milly and Rose live on a farm at the top of a hill. Early each morning, Milly bakes seven loaves of bread which she gives to the dog, the goat, the hen, the peddler, the rooster, old Mrs. Bandy and to Rose. But then Milly takes sick and Rose, who doesn't like to work any harder than she has to, makes one less loaf a day with "comically disastrous consequences."
